Experience
- Initiated career with Environment Canada in Arctic weather stations in 1979. Transferred to Ice Branch in 1981; duties included chart production at Ice Centre, Ice advisor on Coast Guard vessels, patrol of Canada’s ice-covered waters by long range aircraft, and on-ice investigation of ice physical properties.
- Joined Norland Science & Engineering Ltd. in 1984. As a sea ice consultant projects included: revising the Canadian Arctic Shipping Pollution Prevention regulations for the Canadian Coast Guard, conducting surface validation of Radarsat imagery throughout the Canadian Arctic, utilizing down-linked imagery to guide commercial ships in and out of the Arctic, and conducting feasibility studies of marine transportation through ice-covered waters.
- Beginning in 1989, conducted training of ice office personnel and ship’s crews in use of satellite imagery for marine operations; training locations included Ottawa (Environment Canada), Copenhagen (Danish ice service), Washington D.C. (U.S. Navy ice office), Yellowknife (Gov’t of N.W.T. and Hunters and Trappers Assoc.), Halifax (East Coast off-shore operators), Montreal (private shipping company), and Enschede Holland (international ice operations). Training areas included all ice-covered waters in the northern hemisphere, and Antarctica.
- Beginning in 1995 developed a series of Computer-based-tutorials to teach: Radar theory, Ice physics, Analysis of radar imagery, Analysis of optical imagery, Use of dual polarization radar data, and Sea ice recognition from shipboard. Starting in 2006 began working with Canatec Associates International. Ltd.
- Projects include Review of archive satellite imagery to assess feasibility of marine operations in ice-covered waters, providing operational ice forecasts to off-shore operators, and supporting Arctic petroleum exploration in the Beaufort Sea.
